Diamond Clarity

Diamond clarity refers to minute pieces of non crystallised carbon called inclusions as well as surface defects called blemishes. The size, nature, location, and amount of inclusions and blemishes present in or on the diamond determine the diamond's clarity and subsequently affect its value.

These unique and identifying features were bestowed by nature when the diamond was formed millions of years ago deep beneath the earth's surface. The fewer the amount of inclusions present in the diamond – that is the better the diamonds clarity; the rarer and consequently the more valuable the diamond is.

The internationally accepted diamond clarity scale is as follows:

IF

Internally flawless

No internal flaws, but some surface flaws. Very rare beautiful diamonds.

VVS1- VVS2

Very Very Slightly Included

Minute inclusions very difficult to detect under 10x magnification by a trained gemmologist. VVS1 is slightly cleaner than VVS2. An excellent quality diamond.

VS1-VS2

Very Slightly Included

Minor inclusions only visible under 10x magnification. VS1 is slightly cleaner than VS2 Less expensive than the VVS1 or VVS2 grades.

SI1-SI2

Slightly Included

Inclusions easy to see under 10x magnification but usually not visible with the naked eye. SI1 is slightly cleaner than SI2. A good diamond value.

I1-I2-I3

Included

Inclusions visible with the naked eye. The least valuable, but most cost effective option.

Size, quantity, colour, location, visibility, and orientation of inclusions and blemishes all influence the clarity of a diamond. Diamond clarity grades are determined based on the overall appearance of the diamond when viewed under 10 x magnification.
