Diamond Engagement Ring Advice

A diamond engagement ring is probably the most significant piece of diamond jewellery you will ever decide to purchase. As you are most likely NOT a diamond expert, choosing the perfect diamond for your diamond engagement ring can often be difficult and stressful.

Tataza Diamonds aims to make the process of choosing a diamond for your diamond engagement ring easier, and much less stressful.

Here is some advice for buying diamond engagement rings:

Budget:

Before you even commence shopping, it is important to determine your how much you are able to spend on your diamond engagement ring. Different sources propose different amounts. Some say two months salary, some say three weeks salary. There is no right or wrong. It is a matter of personal preference. However whatever the figure you decide, remember there is a diamond for every budget

Her Preference and Her Taste:

You have two choices.

You can buy the diamond loose and present it to her so that she can be involved in the design process of the diamond engagement ring(this is what we prefer).

Or, you can buy the diamond engagement ring without her and surprise her. In this case there are several ‘unknowns’ you need to first learn; start taking notice of her taste (not so easy always) – does she prefer white or yellow gold or does she like platinum. What shape of diamonds does she prefer? Does she prefer a large diamond (perhaps of high colour and low clarity) or does she prefer a smaller diamond (of medium colour but high clarity). What kind of setting does she prefer? Claw set, or rub-over (or bezel) set when it comes to the diamonds. Does she want side or shoulder diamonds or a simple solitaire?

In all likelihood, as she will be wearing the diamond engagement ring for the rest of her life, it could be easier and safer and preferable to buy her the diamond loose online and propose with a beautiful loose diamond and then let her be involved in the design process so that all the variables above are absolutely according to her specific preferences.

Diamond Shape:

Diamonds are available in many different shapes. Tataza Diamonds offers the following diamond shapes: round diamonds, princess cut diamonds, pear shaped diamonds, oval diamonds, marquise diamonds, heart shaped diamonds, emerald cut diamonds, radiant cut diamondscushion cut diamonds and asscher cut (square emerald) diamonds. You will need to be very sure of what diamond shape you require. This too is a matter of personal preference.

Diamond Education:

Become familiar with the 4Cs of diamond characteristics namely; cut, colourclarity and carat weight as these four characteristics define the diamond and determine its price and value. And you will need to decide what diamond characteristics she prefers in order to make your purchase.

The Setting:

There are a huge plethora of different settings available when it comes to diamond engagement rings. The most common settings for diamond engagement rings include the Solitaire, the Prong (or Claw) setting, the Rub-over (or Bezzel) setting and the Channel setting.

Metals most commonly used for engagement ring settings are white gold, yellow gold and platinum. Again it is a matter of personal preference and fashions change all the time.

Comfort:

Diamond engagement rings need to be practical to wear as they are worn every day – if you are out and about and very physical then perhaps a claw (or prong) setting may irritate you as it is more likely to get caught on things compared to say a rub-over (or bezzel) setting. If you work in a factory environment and are exposed to rough surfaces and chemicals then perhaps platinum may be more practical than yellow gold or white gold.
